The Swenson College of Science and Engineering (SCSE) and its Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) invite applications and nominations for the position of Department Head. The successful candidate will be appointed at the level of tenured Associate/Full Professor. We seek a respected scholar and dynamic leader to join the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and SCSE at an exciting time of strategic change. The Department Mathematics and Statistics is the largest department in SCSE. It has 18 tenured, tenure-track positions, and over 11 term faculty members. The department offers two undergraduate programs (Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science), and one Master’s level graduate program (Mathematical Sciences, including Statistics).

Duties:

  • To provide oversight and ensure response for administrative duties for the department
  • To provide oversight of the department budget
  • To be the signature authority for department level issues
  • To lead promotion, tenure, and merit review processes for faculty
  • To evaluate and recommend merit for staff
  • To foster mentoring relationships for faculty and staff
  • To collaborate with faculty on oversight of degree programs and curriculum
  • To work with faculty to determine department level committees as well as committee assignments
  • To be the first level of resolution (or referral if appropriate) on student, faculty and staff administrative issues
  • To lead in department planning including hires, space and utilization of other department resources
  • To be the liaison for communication from the Dean of SCSE and upper level administration
  • To foster collegial and active participation by all department faculty and staff in department governance
  • To foster a climate of inclusion for all in the department

Required Qualification:

  • Ph.D. in Mathematics/Statistics or a closely related field
  • Tenured associate professor or professor in Mathematics/Statistics which is commensurate with an appointment as associate professor or professor with tenure at UMD
  • Leadership and administrative experience
  • Demonstrated excellence in academic and professional service
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and advising undergraduate/graduate students
  • A record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting and engaging in department, college, and campus diversity efforts

Preferred Qualification:

  • Demonstrated excellence in management, communication, and advocacy skills
  • Experience with outreach to both public and private sectors
  • A proven record of scholarship excellence
  • Demonstrated excellence in working with students, staff, and faculty from diverse communities and cultures
  • Record of externally funded research
