The International Mathematical Union has declared 2013 to be the year of The Mathematics of Planet Earth. This note is intended to raise awareness and motivation for making use of the available resources.

As a starting point, and introduction into the year, perhaps you also like this talk by John Baez, whose slides contains various links to further information. My favorite quote from this:

"Teach math as if the world depended on it—because it does."

(Check the National Academics report "Mathematical Sciences in 2025".)

Various lectures and articles can also be found at SIAM and mpe2013. See also AMS and mpe2013 (with nice posters) and this year's Math Awareness Months.

All these and much more can be found through the mpe2013 website, which has grown steadily and by now contains a large amount of resources. To get an overview, here is breakdown of the main structure.

And, of course, the calendar.

Let me also point you to the quite nice Australian Mathsofplanetearth.
