Sensor Networks, Algebraic Topology, and Dynamics

Robert Ghrist gives an overview of how algebraic topology and dynamical systems are being applied to the engineering problem of sensor placement and data collection. Ghrist's work in this field with collaborator Vin de Silva, Pomona College earned them a 2007 SciAm 50 award, Scientific American's list of the fifty most important advancements in technology and innovation.

Climate Math in San Diego

Recently elected SIAG/DS chair Mary Lou Zeeman describes the special session on the mathematics of climate change at the Joint Math Meetings in San Diego in January, 2008. She lists a series of other ongoing efforts and upcoming conferences on the dynamics of climate change, and describes how members of the dynamics community can contribute both in research and in terms of education to tackle problems of climate change and sustainability.

Eusebius Doedel is famous in dynamical systems as the man behind the software package AUTO. He is (almost) equally well known for his many travels and his love for good wine and good food, not to mention a good cigar! Hinke Osinga asked him how he managed to satisfy his appetite for foreign cultures and travel during his academic career at Concordia University, where he has worked since 1979.

Edward Lorenz, Professor of Meteorology, Emeritus, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, passed away on Wednesday, April 16. He was 90 years old.

Herb Keller 1925-2008

Herbert B. Keller, Professor of Applied Mathematics, Emeritus, at the California Institute of Technology, passed away on Saturday, January 26. He was 82 years old.
