International
Conference
On Nonlinear Dynamics And Evolution Equations
July 6-10, 2004, Memorial University of
Newfoundland
St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada |
The International Conference On Nonlinear Dynamics And
Evolution Equations was held July 6-10, 2004 at Memorial University of
Newfoundland, in the historical city St. John's. The conference aimed
at providing an opportunity for scientists in the fields of
differential equations and dynamical systems with applications to
expose their recent new results, to exchange their new ideas, to
explore new methods and new applications, to discuss future
directions of research, and to initiate possible research
collaborations. To maximize the benefit of participants, the
organizers made an effort to control the size of the conference and
all lectures were by invitation. About 80 participants from 16
countries --- including graduate students from the follow-up summer
school organized by the Atlantic Association for Research in the Mathematical
Sciences (AARMS) --- attended the conference. Most impressive was
the list of the plenary speakers consisting of 16 renowned researchers
in the areas of nonlinear dynamics and evolution equations with
applications. They were P. Bates (Michigan State), J. Cushing
(University of Arizona), W. Craig (McMaster University), E. N. Dancer
(University of Sydney), W. Langford (University of Guelph),
K. Mischaikow (Georgia Institute of Technology), C. Rousseau
(Université of Montréal), G. Sell (University of
Minnesota), B. D. Sleeman (University of Leeds), H. L. Smith (Arizona
State University), H.-O. Walther (University of Giessen), G. Webb
(Vanderbilt University), J. Wu (York University), P. van den Driessche
(University of Victoria), Z. J. Xia (Northwestern University), and
Y. Yi (Georgia Institute of Technology).
The conference was supported by the
AARMS,
Le Centre de
Recherches Mathématiques,
The Fields
Institute, the
Pacific Institute for
Mathematical Sciences, and
Memorial University of
Newfoundland. As an "extra curriculum" activity of conference, an
AARMS public lecture titled "Contributions of Mathematical Modeling to
Controlling Infectious Diseases" was delivered by Dr P. van den
Driessche, and was very well received by the general audience.
