Dear Mark Iosifovich Vishik,

On behalf of the mathematicians from Leipzig I would like to congratulate you for being awarded an Honorary Doctorate at the Free University of Berlin.

I remember well your first visit to Leipzig University in the 1980s. You lectured enthusiastically about your new statistical approach to hydrodynamics. All of us were fascinated by your masterful approach to a problem of central importance for our understanding of nature. As a result of your visit, your joint monograph with Fursikov, 'Mathematical Problems of Statistical Hydromechanics', was translated from Russian into German.

Since your early days you made fundamental contributions to the theory of linear and nonlinear partial differential equations. You have always tried to obtain theorems which are of strategic importance for large classes of problems. In 1996 you visited Leipzig as our honorary guest when the new Max-Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences was founded. The year before you visited our institute again together with your wife. Many young scientists of our institute are grateful to you for organizing a highly stimulating seminar along with having fruitful discussions about their own mathematical work.

Dear Mark Iosifovich Vishik, I wish you and your wife the best for the next years to come. We are looking forward to seeing you again in Leipzig.
