Mark your calendars now! The 2007 SIAM Conference on Applications of Dynamical Systems will be held May 28 to June 1, 2007 in Snowbird, Utah.

We are pleased to announce that the following people have agreed to serve on the Organizing Committee:

Sue Ann Campbell (co-chair) University of Waterloo
Arjen Doelman University of Amsterdam
Jinqiao Duan Illinois Institute of Technology
Alain Goriely University of Arizona
Aric Hagberg Los Alamos National Laboratory
Bernd Krauskopf (co-chair) University of Bristol
Mary Silber Northwestern University
Mary Lou Zeeman University of Texas at San Antonio

We look forward to working with them to put together an exciting conference.

Based upon feedback from the 2005 and prior meetings, we will be taking some measures to ensure that a larger group of distinct speakers can be accommodated and to minimize the overlap between minisymposia. These will include:

  • Enforcing SIAM's long-standing rule that attendees are limited to one minisymposium talk.
  • Setting up a voluntary pre-proposal stage where organizers can submit a title, a topic and a tentative list of speakers. This will allow us to put organizers of similar sessions in contact with one another so that they may coordinate their efforts.
More details about the conference will be available in the coming months.

We look forward to seeing you all at Snowbird in 2007.

2007 Conference Co-chairs

Last November 18 members of the SIAM Activity Group in Dynamical Systems stood for election. The newly elected officers and advisory board members are:

Chair:
Philip Holmes

"Dynamical systems is a multidisciplinary activity par excellence, and SIAG-DS members are multiply connected to almost all areas of science and engineering. We should emphasize and exploit these connections both to bring new applications to mathematics, and to export new mathematics to applications.

The major roles of SIAG-DS are: organizing the Snowbird meeting and special sessions and minisymposia at other SIAM and AMS meetings, the SIAG-DS website), and the electronic journal SIADS. These contributions to the world of research and scholarship should continue and strengthen. I would also encourage SIAG-DS members to engage in education at all levels: graduate, undergraduate, K-12, and of the general public. This is especially important now, when science is increasingly ignored in favor of political or religious dogma."

Vice Chair:
Mary Silber

"The most important function of the SIAG/DS is organizing its biennial meeting, which is arguably the best meeting of its size for applied dynamical systems researchers and students. The officers of the SIAG/DS face the challenge of setting the priorities for the meeting in order to better fulfill its potential, a potential resulting simply from bringing together a diverse, international group of researchers for an intense week of competing parallel sessions, with limited opportunities for distraction!"

Program Director:
Sue Ann Campbell

"One of the strengths of the SIAG on Dynamical Systems is the interdisciplinary nature of its membership. It is an important vehicle for bringing together researchers working on theoretical, computational and experimental studies of dynamical systems. We should continue to nurture and support this, especially through participation in the biennial conference of the SIAG. While this conference is very successful, many feel it is becoming too large. We need to streamline the conference, while still allowing for participation by younger researchers and researchers from a variety of disciplines, especially in new and emerging areas."

Secretary/Treasurer:
Hinke Osinga

"SIAG/DS should pride itself on its successful Snowbird meetings. One of the primary strengths of these meetings and SIAG/DS in general is its international character. This aspect has been further developed by the creation of DSWeb. More than half of the members of our online community are not SIAG members, and many are from countries that are underrepresented at the Snowbird meeting. I believe that it is very important to maintain and continue to develop DSWeb as a portal for dynamical systems and a showcase of our community."

The new members of the Advisory Board are:

Bard Ermentrout Yannis Kevrekidis Ed Ott Steve Strogatz Mary Lou Zeeman

The terms of the new officers and advisory board members is for two years.
Thanks to all who participated in the election process.

Hinke Osinga
