Former Chair of the AG, Alan Champneys, writes
The key point about moving is that someone needs to find a credible
alternative. The problem is that at each snowbird, the question is
always snowbird or
"somewhere else unspecified". Given the uncertainty of "somewhere
else unspecified" then people always vote for Snowbird.
To be clear, I am genuinely open minded about whether we should move
or not. I just think that we need a real choice at the business
meeting. If there is no where
else on the table, then inertia will mean we will continue to vote for snowbird.
Maybe we
should email the SIAG membership and ask them if
they can suggest suitable alternatives. I am SURE they exist. The
SIAM office can do the leg work of investigating
these suggestions.
In fact, I recall that Snowbird came about because Peter Bates, one
of the founders of the Applied Dynamical Systems conference, happened
to know the venue.
Our current Chair, Hans Kaper, let us now that he has been working with Linda Thiel of SIAM over the past year to produce a list of alternative venues. At the upcoming AG Business Meeting in Snowbird, a concrete list of four to six alternatives will be presented to help the discussion along.
