"Chaos"
in Scholarpedia
|
On behalf of the Encyclopedia of Dynamical Systems,
the free peer-reviewed encyclopedia
Scholarpedia conducted an election of authors
for the article "Chaos" with the goal to identify the best
living expert on this subject. The nominees (in the order of
nomination by the public) were:
- James A. Yorke
- Tien-Yien Li
- Edward Ott
- Robert L. Devaney
- Robert C. Hilborn
- Clark Robinson
The election started on 14 May 2006 and engaged 121
participants.
The rules of the election are described
online. In summary, each participant can vote for no more than three
candidates. Each vote is multiplied by the participant's Scholar
Index, which reflects the expertise and usefulness of contributions of
that person to Scholarpedia. (So that experts have greater weight in
the election). Then, the weighted sum of the votes and a soft-max
procedure is used to select the future author of the article.
Eugene M. Izhikevich, editor-in-chief of
Scholarpedia, has the pleasure to announce that Jim Yorke (University
of Maryland, College Park) won the election. He has accepted the
invitation of Scholarpedia and he will write this article with Tim
Sauer (George Mason University); see
http://www.scholarpedia.org/article/Chaos/.
Eugene Izhikevich thanks all participants of the
election.
